Draw from your past, but do not let your past draw from you.

Individual and relationship counseling for adults in Central Ohio
The path to living authentically begins with curiosity, and the courage to explore what authenticity means to you. For many people, therapy sessions are the first place they begin to ask themselves these kinds of questions, and give themselves permission to be who they are, rather than who they've been told to be. I cannot tell you who you are, what you should do, or where you should go, but I will walk this path with you, and ensure you have a safe, supportive space to be exactly who you are.
Spilling your guts to a stranger can be intimidating, so let's fix that. My name is Kaylea Sluss, and I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2023.
I moved to Ohio after high school in 2005, took my time getting through college, and was a stay-at-home mom for a while before figuring out what I wanted to do with my psychology degree. I love to play video games and talk to my house plants, and my playlist ranges from Tchaikovsky to Baby Metal. I'm terrible at sports, but I do enjoy a good hockey game.
I worked in retail (mostly grocery stores) for many years, both on the floor, and in the office. During my last year at OSU, I volunteered with Disaster Services at the Red Cross. This is what led me to counseling, and much of my graduate research focused on burnout, vicarious trauma, and disaster mental health.
If you've been to therapy before, or at least know a little bit about it, you know there are several theories and probably three times as many ways to approach them. I like to borrow a little bit from all of them, taking evidence-based research and best-practices - keeping in mind that they are typically made with small sample of the human population in mind - and helping you find how these things apply to your life, and your goals.
My favorite theorists are choice-driven and believe that people are essentially the experts in their own lives, motivated by finding meaning and purpose, but often lack the resources or self-esteem they need to achieve their goals, and to do so authentically. In other words, "Who the heck even am I? And how do I get what/where I want in life, preferably without losing myself along the way?"
Maybe you already know that CBT works really well for you. Awesome! Let's do more of that. Maybe you're curious about Expressive Arts Therapy, or want to learn more about Narrative Therapy. Just as awesome! We can try those things out, and see what sticks. Therapy is a "practice," and you may not find the best fit on the first try. Getting it wrong is just part of the process.

Counseling can help address a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, stress management, and more. I utilize a variety of trauma-informed and evidence-based practices to ensure your treatment plan reflects your individual needs and goals. The ultimate goal is to improve your self care, clarify your personal goals and values, and help you live your life authentically - whatever that looks like for you!
Sessions are typically 60 minutes long, and it is important to allow yourself time to process and practice what you have gone over in therapy. That said, the frequency of counseling sessions depend on your specific needs and goals. Some clients may benefit from weekly sessions, while others may attend bi-weekly or even monthly. This can change depending on your availability, budget, needs, and readiness to decrease the frequency of sessions. I will always ask you when you'd like to reschedule, and there is never any pressure to keep to a specific routine.
I also offer short-term, solution focused sessions that don't require a full history or deep dive into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Perhaps you just want to address a problem, find ways to manage the related emotions, and be on your way. We can do that!
I was a client long before I was a counselor, so I know first hand how nerve-wracking it can be to sit in front of a stranger and tell your story. I like to start with a (free) 10-15 minute phone call, just to introduce myself and get to know a little more about you and your needs. During the first session, we will go over your history, current stressors, and create goals for therapy. I usually dedicate 90 minutes to these sessions, as there can be a lot to get through. After that, we take things at your pace, and work on what matters most to you in the moment.
If you're not sure what to talk about, I can help guide you, but I can't tell you what you want/need to work on - that's your job!
Therapy doesn't have to look the same for everybody. In addition to traditional talk therapy services, I can also help with:
Relationship Counseling - this includes romantic and platonic partnerships, poly/enm relationships, and even friendships. This can be ongoing, or solution-focused/short-term.
Pre-marriage/Pre-committment Counseling - Taking the next step in any relationship can bring up a whole slew of new and conflicting emotions, behaviors, and struggles when it comes to learning each others' communication styles. It often helps to have an objective "translator" to assist with these types of transitions.
Therapeutic Mediation - This is typically used by people who are considering or actively ending a relationship, or working to find a solution to an acute shared issue/conflict. It is most often short-term, and is meant to ensure all parties are able to communicate effectively and have a space to process emotions that may be hindering the resolution process. **This is NOT a substitute for legal mediation, I am not a lawyer, and I cannot give advice on contracts or specific legal issues.**
Employee Wellness - I have a passion for helping people manage and prevent symptoms of burnout. If you would like to learn more about caregiver burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and encouraging a culture of mental wellness, I can provide education and resources to help you and your employees thrive!
