Individual and relationship counseling for adults in Central Ohio
Individual and relationship counseling for adults in Central Ohio

My name is Kaylea Sluss (she/her), I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I have been practicing since 2023. I moved to Ohio in 2005, attended both Columbus State and OSU, and live in Columbus with my husband, son, and our wonderful pets. While volunteering with Disaster Services at the American Red Cross, I discovered the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Dayton, and here we are!
When I am not in therapist mode, I like to spend my time playing! My family and I love playing video, card, and tabletop games together. I enjoy reading and writing fiction, I've dabbled in every kind of craft, and still shamelessly watch cartoons. I love to be in nature, whether in the woods, or walking around downtown - there's always something to see and learn.

My "therapy role-models" believe that people are essentially the experts in their own lives, motivated by finding meaning and purpose, but often lack the resources or self-esteem they need to achieve their goals. From this perspective, I use evidence-backed research and interventions to help my clients figure out things like, "Who the heck even am I? What do I need? What do I want? How do I get what I need and want in life without losing myself along the way?"
I have a strong interest in learning styles, attachment and communication styles, habit formation, and the body's responses to stimuli (i.e., how the body reacts to internal and external sensory experiences against your will). I love being able to help people get "un-stuck," finding ways to take control of challenging circumstances, shift perspectives on existential crises, and upgrade their operating system.
Therapy is a "practice," and while I can give you tools, it is up to you to put them to use. There are no cheat codes, only guidelines.

Of course! But what does that look like to you? For many people, therapy sessions are the first place they begin to ask themselves what they want to do about a situation rather than what they are supposed to do. How do you want to heal? How do you want to grieve? How do you want to express yourself?
Therapy cannot change what has happened, or take away the pain you have experienced. What it can do is improve your resilience, self-esteem, and ability to communicate your wants, needs, and boundaries. This is a space to learn about the mind-body connection, explore your values, and connect to your sense of self.

Counseling can help address a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship problems, stress management, and more. I utilize a variety of trauma-informed and evidence-based practices to ensure your treatment plan reflects your individual needs and goals. The ultimate goal is to improve your self care, clarify your personal goals and values, and help you live your life authentically - whatever that looks like for you!
Sessions are typically 60 minutes long, and it is important to allow yourself time to process and practice what you have gone over in therapy. That said, the frequency of counseling sessions depend on your specific needs and goals. Some clients may benefit from weekly sessions, while others may attend bi-weekly or even monthly. This can change depending on your availability, budget, needs, and readiness to decrease the frequency of sessions. I will always ask you when you'd like to reschedule, and there is never any pressure to keep to a specific routine.
I also offer short-term, solution focused sessions that don't require a full history or deep dive into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Perhaps you just want to address a problem, find ways to manage the related emotions, and be on your way. We can do that!
I was a client long before I was a counselor, so I know first hand how nerve-wracking it can be to sit in front of a stranger and tell your story. I like to start with a (free) 10-15 minute phone call, just to introduce myself and get to know a little more about you and your needs. During the first session, we will go over your history, current stressors, and create goals for therapy. Initial sessions are typically 90 minutes, as there can be a lot to get through. After that, we take things at your pace, and work on what matters most to you in the moment.
If you're not sure what to talk about, I can help guide you, but I can't tell you what you want/need to work on - that's your job!
Therapy doesn't have to look the same for everybody. In addition to traditional talk therapy services, I can also help with:
Relationship Counseling - this includes romantic and platonic partnerships, poly/enm relationships, and even friendships. This can be ongoing or solution-focused/short-term.
Pre-marriage/Pre-committment Counseling - Taking the next step in any relationship can bring up a whole mess of new and conflicting emotions, behaviors, and struggles when it comes to learning each others' communication styles. It often helps to have an objective "translator" to assist with these types of transitions.
Therapeutic Mediation - This is typically used by people who are considering or are actively ending a relationship, or working to find a solution to an acute shared issue/conflict. It is most often short-term, and is meant to ensure all parties are able to communicate effectively and have a space to process emotions that may be hindering the resolution process. **This is NOT a substitute for legal mediation, I am not a lawyer, and I cannot give advice on contracts or specific legal issues.**
Employee Wellness - I have a passion for helping people manage and prevent symptoms of burnout. If you would like to learn more about caregiver burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and encouraging a culture of mental wellness, I can provide education and resources to help you and your employees thrive!
